Dimples on the cheeks are made in a short operation that ties a small point of the skin's underside to the cheek muscle through a cut on the inside of the mouth. For dimple surgery in Korea, Pixelab Beauty Clinic lists one price for a single side and one for both sides, and Dr. Jongkeun Song performs the operation under local anesthesia or sedation.

Is it for you?

Who dimple creation surgery suits, and who should wait

A natural cheek dimple is a small dip that forms when the skin is tethered to the muscle beneath it, so the skin pulls inward as you smile. Dimple creation copies that link on purpose. The aim is a dip that appears with expression, in a spot that fits the proportions of your face.

Where the dimple sits matters as much as how it is made. An observational study using 3D scans of faces compared the landmarks used to place dimples and concluded that each position should be chosen from the individual face, with a simulation at consultation (David, 2025). In practice that means you smile in front of a mirror while the point is marked, and you see where the dip will fall before anything is done.

The items on the right below are reasons to delay surgery or to discuss your history first. Several of them can be resolved before a later booking.

Usually a good fit

  • Wanting a dimple that shows mainly when smiling
  • Healthy gums and teeth with no current mouth infection
  • Able to keep the mouth clean with rinses after surgery
  • Able to stay in Seoul through the first post-op check

We may suggest waiting

  • Gum disease, a tooth abscess or mouth ulcers right now
  • A history of keloid or thick scars (judged case by case)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder (tell the clinic first)
  • Expecting both dimples to match exactly

How it works

How a cheek dimple is created in surgery

Dimple creation surgery, also called dimpleplasty, is a minor facial operation. In the technique described in the surgical literature, a small opening is made on the inside of the cheek opposite the marked point, a little tissue is cleared if needed, and a stitch joins the deep layer of the skin to the muscle below (Lee, 2025). When the cheek muscle moves, the skin follows it inward and the dimple appears. Because the work is done from inside the mouth, there is no cut on the outer skin of the face.

Safety in this area depends on anatomy. Branches of the facial nerve that move the lips run through the cheek, and the parotid duct (Stensen's duct), which carries saliva into the mouth, passes nearby. The 2025 review names knowledge of these structures as the core of a safe operation and advises care in people prone to keloids (Lee, 2025).

Published outcome data come from case series and reviews. The largest series, 2,048 patients analyzed in Korea, reported few complications when the anatomy of the dimple was respected (Chung, 2020), and a smaller report of 23 cases described a suture technique as safe and reproducible (El-Sabbagh, 2015). A 2026 narrative review notes that comparative trials are still missing, so the evidence is limited in quality (Chordia, 2026).

Dr. Song performs the operation. The clinic lists local anesthesia or sedation as the options for dimple surgery, and the choice is made with you before the day.

1

Marking the point

At consultation

You smile in a mirror while the dimple point is marked on each chosen cheek.

2

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is given inside the cheek, or sedation if you chose it.

3

Inner-cheek opening

Typically about 30 minutes or less

A small cut is made on the inside of the cheek opposite the mark.

4

Anchoring stitch

A stitch ties the underside of the skin to the cheek muscle so the skin dips with movement.

5

Closing and aftercare

The inner wound is closed and mouth-care instructions are given before you leave.

Prices

Dimple Surgery Cost in South Korea

Dimple surgery has two prices on the clinic's list: one for a single cheek and one for both cheeks. Neither figure includes VAT. Korean VAT of 10% is charged on top at payment, and the card for each option shows the VAT-inclusive amount beside the list price so you can budget in full before you book flights.

Local anesthesia and IV sedation also appear on the price list as add-on lines. Ask for a written quote that names the side or sides, the anesthesia you chose and whether an add-on line applies, so the final amount matches what you agreed. As an example, a pair of dimples is listed at ₩990,000 + VAT.

Recovery

Recovery timeline after dimple surgery

Surgery day

You go home the same day and begin mouth rinses after meals

First few days

Daily routine typically resumes within a few days; cheeks feel tight and sore

Around 1 week

Post-op check of the inner wound; flying home is typically possible from here

Weeks 1–2

Swelling and soreness settle; exercise typically from about 2 weeks

Following months

The dip softens and shows mainly with expression; it can loosen over time

Safety

Risks and limits of dimple creation

Dimple surgery is small, yet it is still an operation inside the mouth, where bacteria are always present. The known risks are:

  • Swelling, bruising and soreness of the cheek for 1–2 weeks, which can make chewing and wide smiling uncomfortable.
  • Infection of the inner wound, which shows as growing pain, heat, pus or a bad taste.
  • A dimple that is too shallow, fades or disappears, so a second operation may be needed.
  • A dimple that is deeper than wanted or visible at rest for longer than expected.
  • Asymmetry between two dimples in depth or position.
  • A reaction to the stitch, such as a small lump inside the cheek.
  • Injury to a branch of the facial nerve or to the parotid duct, which can affect lip movement or saliva flow.
  • Thick or keloid-type scarring inside the cheek in people prone to it.

A fading dimple is the main limit reported. In the 2,048-patient series, about 8% of patients had a second operation, mostly because the dimple was shallow or had faded (Chung, 2020).

Contact the clinic promptly if pain gets worse after the first days, the cheek turns red and hot, fluid drains from the wound, or you develop a fever.

FAQ

Questions about dimple surgery in Seoul

How much does dimple surgery cost in Korea?

One cheek is ₩550,000 and both cheeks are ₩990,000, each before 10% VAT. Local anesthesia and IV sedation are listed as separate add-on lines, so your written quote should state the sides treated and any anesthesia charge before you pay.

How long does it take to heal after dimple creation?

The clinic expects swelling and soreness for 1 to 2 weeks. The wound is inside the mouth, so rinsing after meals and keeping teeth and gums clean matter most in that time. Daily routine typically returns within a few days, and full activity including exercise typically from about 2 weeks.

When can I fly home after dimple surgery?

Typically after the first post-op check, about 1 week after surgery. The clinic has not set its own flight date for this operation, and general guidance for cosmetic face procedures is 7 to 10 days. Plan your stay so the wound check happens before you leave Seoul.

Who performs dimple surgery at Pixelab Beauty Clinic?

Dr. Jongkeun Song performs it. Dr. Song is a Korean board-certified plastic surgeon and the Medical Director of Pixelab Beauty Clinic, trained in plastic surgery residency at The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, where facial anatomy and wound closure are core skills.

Is the dimple price before VAT, and is anesthesia extra?

Yes, both dimple prices are listed before VAT, and 10% is added at payment. A pair of dimples comes to ₩1,089,000 with VAT. Local anesthesia and IV sedation have their own lines on the price list, and the quote shows whether either applies.

How long does a created dimple last?

The clinic describes the result as long-term, though a dimple can loosen with time. How deep the dimple stays depends on how the tissue heals around the stitch. If it fades or ends up too shallow, a second operation is the remedy described in published reports.

Can I choose exactly where my dimple goes?

Yes, within what your anatomy allows. The point is marked while you smile in front of a mirror, so you see where the dip will sit. Research using 3D face scans supports picking the spot from your own facial proportions instead of a fixed measurement.

Will the dimple show when I am not smiling?

It can at first. A new dimple may be visible at rest while the stitch holds the tissue firmly, and it softens over the following weeks and months so that it shows mainly with expression. How quickly that happens varies from person to person.

Does dimple surgery hurt?

The operation itself is done under local anesthesia or sedation, so you should not feel the cut. Afterward the cheeks are sore and tight for 1 to 2 weeks, mostly when chewing or smiling widely. Let the clinic know about any past reactions to anesthetic injections.

Will dimple surgery leave a mark on my face?

The opening is made on the inside of the cheek, so there is no incision on the outer skin. The inner wound heals inside the mouth. People prone to keloids can form thick scar tissue there, which is why that history is discussed before surgery.

Can I ask about dimple placement in English?

Yes. An English interpreter is on staff, and you can send photos of your smile on WhatsApp in English before you travel to ask about one or two dimples and the timing of your stay. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Is a deposit needed to book dimple surgery, and can I cancel?

Deposit and cancellation terms are not listed on this page. Request them in writing together with your quote before you transfer any money, so you know what can be refunded if your flights or surgery date change.
